Access Motorcycle 12 Volt Power to Charge Cell Phone

by on Jul.22, 2017, under Accessories

Our 1st product, the Bohemian Biker 12V Power Port x SAE 2 Pin Connector assembly, has become widely popular among Bikers!

Cheap insurance, don’t You think?

When doing business out of a vendor booth at a Biker Event, where customers often ask questions about these – the look on their faces when I tell them $5.00 is one of “Five bucks… that’s all… are you kidding me…???”

I admit, offering them at that price they are intended to be a bit of a “loss leader” – with the hope customers will look further into our line of products. But, our intention is to keep prices very reasonable – period. No one wants to pay a high price for something, even if they’ve had a hard time finding it. That’s also why we use economical USPS 1st Class mail whenever possible. After all, who wants to pay as much for shipping as they do for the product?

Once you have one, you might just find a home for it in your saddlebag. Chances are, someday down the road it’ll come in handy in dealing with an inopportune dead cell phone battery. Just think of your “Hero” status upon being the one to pull this gizmo out when the need occurs.

Who doesn’t know the helpless feeling that comes when standing there with a dead cell phone – when you need to use it…???

Once in a while, I get questioned about the possibility of draining of one’s battery. Trust me, I’ve left a cell phone charging off my bike’s battery while I was away from the bike for several hours – no problem… Now, I can think of conditions under which one might not get away with this – a la, battery in poor state of charge, charging system not working properly, etc…

I’ll also admit, I’ve started my bike and rode for hours with my cell phone charging off the bike in my saddlebag. There are probably schools of thought that say “don’t do that”, but I do… This may be counter to cell phone manufacturer’s recommendations, but I do it in cars and trucks – no problem. The other consideration might be stealing away from your bike’s charging capacity. If your particular bike’s charging capacity is marginal with respect to loads – you may experience a problem.

In support of my beliefs and experiences above, with pushing several thousand of these assemblies out there being used – no one has come back to me with a story of a problem. Considering this a Blog providing the ability for customers to comment – we see no comments reporting any issues.

Also consider the fact that Deltran, the industry leader in battery maintenance with their line of Battery Tender models, offer a 12V Power Port x SAE 2 Pin connector. In fact, I know of H-D dealers offering these products. Obviously, if their use was an issue – they would be throwing up the flag.

Also consider that some bikers are piling on heated clothing loads, as well. Yet another battery connected quick connect pigtail accessing a bike’s 12 volt battery and charging system power.

So, the concept of tapping into a motorcycle electrical system is nothing new. Although it does need be to be done with forethought and care. Polarity, and fuse protection being two key issues.

As we’ve discussed in previous posts, the Deltran Quick Connect assembly has an integral fuse holder and a 7.5 amp fuse. Therefore, loads need to be limited to less than a total draw of 7.5 amps. Although you won’t approach that maximum with a cell phone charger, you may if you attempt to run a portable tire pump – I’ve seen where some 12V tire pumps draw 8 amps.

With respect to polarity, we have discussed that topic in previous posts, as well. Our Power Port Assembly is of the necessary polarity to work correctly when coupled to a properly installed Deltran Fused Quick Connect pigtail.

Panel Bulkhead 2 Pin Surface Mount w/ Extension – 12 AWG

by on Feb.01, 2017, under Application

In response to a specific Customer request, We put together this assembly.

Panel Bulkhead Surface Mount 2 Pin w/ Enhanced Grip Extension - 12 AWG

Panel Bulkhead Surface Mount 2 Pin w/ Enhanced Grip Extension – 12 AWG

An aspect that makes this assembly particularly useful is that a 13/16″ hole drilled in a panel, bulkhead, or other surface, as necessary to install this Surface Mount Connector, allows our Enhanced Grip Connector body to pass through, as well. This facilitates a very cool installation!

This assembly is of particular benefit to those building a portable power unit with a battery in a battery box. The polarity is set up such that the Enhanced Grip Connector couples correctly with a properly installed Fused Battery Quick Connect. The Surface Mount connector provides an output of the proper polarity.

For necessary protection, “Battery Quick Connect” assemblies have an integral fuse holder for fuse sized to protect the circuit components, generally based on the current carrying capacity of the conductors. This assembly being 12 AWG, we offer a 12 AWG Fused Quick Connect, as well. Your choice of fuse value can be based on your particular application components, but is limited to the ampacity of 12 AWG.

Added SAE 2 Pin – 14 AWG !!!

by on Mar.05, 2012, under SAE 2 Pin

We recently added SAE 2 Pin connector assemblies with 14 AWG leads to our product line !!!

At this point we have a stock of “Power Side” assemblies with 14 AWG pigtail leads, i.e., red insulated conductor leading to the protected “female” side of the SAE 2 Pole connector.

We will be expanding our inventory of this product line from there – 1st to follow will be “Load Side” assemblies.  Then we will move on to assemblies with two black insulated leads (both 12″ pigtails & 5′ whips), which allows the installer to use the assemblies as desired with respect to polarity (Reference: past posts specifically addressing SAE 2 Pin connector polarity).

This line of SAE 2 Pin connectors with 14 AWG leads and whips is part of our continuing efforts to meet an ever wider range of current carrying capabilities.  Although we focus on motorcycle related applications here, there are a vast number of other applications for which our customers wish to use SAE 2 Pin connectors.

Our line of SAE 2 Pin connector assemblies enable many a “do-it-yourself” installer to obtain the wire gauge with the current carrying capacity necessary for his or her specific application.

We appreciate hearing about our customers’ intended applications – especially when we learn of those we hadn’t heard before.  Actually, intended use has often driven our development of an addition to our product line.  We have worked hand-in-hand with several customers in pinpointing the features of an assembly that will ultimately meet the needs of others, as well.

This is our chosen niche – addressing the needs of customers with a desire to utilize the SAE 2 Pin connector in their project.  We have, and will continue to develop our product line on that basis.  Our aim is to do that in a manner that creates ease on the part of our customers – both in terms of making products easily obtained at a reasonable price, and by providing a forum through which technical information can be accessed.

As always, we encourage our readers to comment and ask any questions they may have – chances are, if you have a question, others do, as well.  Therefore, others will benefit from your inquiry, and there lies the beauty of a technical forum such as this.

Heated Clothing COAX x SAE 2 Pin Adapter Assembly Stock

by on Feb.21, 2012, under COAX

Our Heated Clothing COAX x SAE 2 Pin Adapter Assembly has been popular over the past years, and we increased our stock stock in preparation for early Spring 2012 riders!

This handy adapter assembly allows those who would like to avoid installing a 2nd Quick Connect pigtail – in addition to their Deltran Battery Tender Fused Quick Connect pigtail.

In other words, if in lieu of installing the COAX Quick Connect assembly that accompanied your heated clothing, you’d rather tap into your bike’s battery and charging system power via your existing Battery Tender pigtail – we’ve got the adapter for you!

This Heated Clothing COAX x SAE 2 Pin Adapter Assembly couples to the SAE 2 Pin end of your Battery Tender pigtail, making it a quick and convenient alternative to the Heated Clothing Quick Connect assembly.

Understand, you will be limited by the 7.5 amp fuse integral to your Deltran Battery Tender Fused Quick Connect pigtail.  Therefore, you won’t be able to stack up multiple pieces of heated clothing.  You should be fine powering a pair of heated gloves, but it’s important to consult the literature accompanying your heated clothing for the specific amperage draw.

I’ve hooked up and powered my girlfriend Jann’s (Tourmaster) heated gloves in this manner many times with no problem whatsoever.  I generally couple-up the assembly before I mount up (taking a few loops around the rear highway bar adjacent to where my Battery Tender pigtail hangs), and hand the gloves to Jann after she climbs on board.

For additional information (including pictures), please scroll down to similarly titled post dated 4/5/09 (below) under COAX Category.

Please also comment or email any questions or concerns – we welcome email at: bohemianbiker@bohemianbiker.com

These and other products are available through our e-commerce website at:  www.solarcapitalist.com

Heavy SAE 2 Pin Cable Assemblies

by on Oct.08, 2011, under Application, SAE 2 Pin, Solar

This is a display we constructed showing our Heavy SAE 2 Pin Cable Assemblies designed for handling higher amperages:

These are SAE 2 Pin cables assembled with 12 AWG (left, and left top), and 10 AWG (remainder) with Black insulation – allowing their use regardless of application with respect to polarity (i.e., without conflicting with standard polarity/insulation color practices).

Manufactured here in the USA to our specifications, and using the same sturdy, high quality SAE 2 Pin connectors for which we’ve become known .

In response to the desires communicated by customers – we have been contracting the manufacture of a wider and wider variety of SAE 2 Pin connector assemblies with both 12 AWG and 10 AWG wire.  These assemblies have been developed to meet the needs of the do-it-yourselfer, be they portable solar power enthusiasts, or a Biker.  Certainly there are others – we’ve outfitted customers with projects ranging from equipping a tractor for connection to a 12 volt spray unit, to HAM radio operators wanting a heavy gauge power feed.

Being a Biker myself, I had a burning desire to have a heavier gauge “pigtail” hanging from my ’01 Road King’s battery to support “jumping” the battery without having to remove the seat.  Always the Boy Scout – I am dedicated to “Being Prepared”, and being an Engineer, as well – I am dedicated to coming up with the means.  SAE 2 Pin connectors with 10 AWG pigtails and cables was the answer to my plan (and that of other Bikers, as well) , and so I contracted to have them manufactured.

Now, it was not my intention to to have an integral fuse in this heavy gauge pigtail – which clearly violates protocol.  Thinking in terms of this as a primary component in a “jumper rig” – I didn’t want the added complication (knowing full well, I’d have to pay especially close attention to the absence of a fuse in this pigtail assembly).  I must warn that this is a personal choice and responsibilty one is taking – not only by installing a pigtail without an integral fuse, but by “jumping” a motorcycle, as well.  Understand – there is a chance you might fry something by doing so.  I’ve done some research to educate myself along these lines, and I suggest anyone else do the same.  You have been warned !!!

Additional Blog Posts pertinent to the above products can be found via headings at the top of webpage.  Note – It is very important for anyone attempting to use these assemblies to have a clear understanding of electrical concepts such as “polarity”.  We highly recommend educating oneself along this line.

Possibilities Provided by an SAE 2 Pin Connection

by on Oct.07, 2011, under Hello World!, SAE 2 Pin

If you’re a Biker, check out the possibilities provided by the SAE 2 Pin connection on your Fused Quick Connect “pigtail” (if you have a Deltran Battery Tender, and installed the included assembly on your motorcycle’s battery):

As the saying goes – a picture is worth a thousand words…  Made up this display to get the point across –  there are quite a few assemblies that will couple up to your Fused Quick Connect “pigtail”.  These assemblies address applications ranging from extending reach to facilitating things like adaptation of 12 Volt “cigarette lighter plug” type cell phone chargers, and COAX heated clothing (example: heated gloves) connectors.  In addition, there are butt ended assemblies allowing do-it-yourselfers to install their own accessory circuits for charging such hand held electronics as GPS units and iPods.

So, it can be visualized that the SAE 2 Pin connector on your Deltran Battery Tender “Fused Quick Connect” pigtail provides access to your motorcycle’s battery and charging system 12 volt power.  This, in addition to providing the means to conveniently and effectively maintain and thereby extend the life of your bike’s battery.

The SAE 2 Pin connector is often alternatively called an SAE 2 Prong, SAE 2 Pole, SAE 2 Conductor connector, as well as a “flat” or “trailer” connector.  Generally speaking, it is intended for 12 Volt DC applications.  Assemblies with this connector can often be found in your local automotive store – usually in the form of a 12″ extension.  Widely imported, the quality and durability fits lighter applications.

Although some of the displayed assemblies are imported from abroad, those made for Bohemian Biker LLC (and to our specifications) are manufactured here in the USA !!! The higher quality of these SAE 2 Pin connectors manufactured here in the United States is obvious – they are sturdier, and have greater strain relief.

Additional Blog Posts pertinent to the above products can be found via headings at the top of webpage.  Note – It is very important for anyone attempting to use these assemblies to have a clear understanding of electrical concepts such as “polarity”.  We highly recommend educating oneself along this line.

More about Bohemian Biker LLC

by on Oct.04, 2011, under Hello World!

Bohemian Biker LLC and its blog type website www.bohemianbiker.com are the result of a man’s passion for interaction, and especially interaction with those oriented toward “doing-it-themselves”.  Ray Bowers had always dreamed of “being in business for himself”, and stumbled upon his niche once realizing most battery maintenance equipment and portable solar charging equipment employ the same connector type – an SAE 2 Pin connector.

Upon discovering this, Ray’s first endeavor was the development of a manufactured 12V power port x SAE 2 Pin assembly to access a motorcycle’s 12V battery and charging system power for charging cell phones, etc.  What he envisioned was an assembly of the specific length that would reach  from a Battery Tender “Quick Connect” pigtail to a motorcycle’s adjacent saddlebag.  Thanks to the help of an especially patient sales representative, Ray was able to negotiate the manufacture of  the assembly he believed would be popular.  Sure enough, the assembly did indeed prove popular, and that initial design has remained popular for several years now.

With that taste of success, Ray began contracting the manufacture of additional assemblies he believed would be useful.  Some were designed to be used in a specific application.  For example, a heated  glove COAX “female” x SAE 2 Pin assembly – avoiding the installation of another battery pigtail.  Others were designed to facilitate “do-it-yourself” circuit building.  For example, a circuit taking its feed off a Battery Tender pigtail to support 12V power port charging of a handlebar mounted GPS unit.

Customers seeking higher capacity assemblies, and Ray’s own desire for SAE 2 Pin assemblies with heavier gauge leads for ideas he had, encouraged him to begin contacting the manufacture of SAE 2 Pin connectors with 16, 12 and 10 AWG leads.  One such idea Ray had been sitting on was 10 AWG assemblies to facilitate the “jumping” of a motorcycle without the necessity for seat removal.

Truth is, Ray is pretty focused on utility.  He has no bells or whistles on his blacked-out ape-hanger’d ’01 Road King – no handlebar mounted gizmos, no frills.  But, he does have an extra 10 AWG pigtail hanging adjacent to his Battery Tender pigtail.  An engineer by education and work experience, product development is another exciting aspect of “minding his own business”.  Ray spent 25+ years in heavy industry – nuclear power, oil and chemical, as well as manufacturing.  He has also spent a few years as a teacher-naturalist and shooting instructor.

What Ray finds especially enjoyable is talking a customer through a “do-it-yourself” project.  He loves to hear the level of confidence increase as a not so knowledgeable soul grasps something like the reason behind the polarity of a circuit component.

As a Baby Boomer, it’s taken significant self-study for this 56 year old to keep up with such concepts as online “search priority”.  On his Bohemian Biker website, Ray includes a quote from Ralph Waldo Emerson – “Do not go where the path may lead; go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.”

BTW – SAE 2 Pin assemblies that Ray has developed are manufacturer right here in the USA !!!

10 AWG Application – Customer Pic’s

by on Dec.31, 2010, under Application

Check it out…  Crafty Customer, Mark Penman, assembled and installed some of our SAE 2 Pin – 10 AWG offerings to facilitate easy access to his bike’s 12-volt battery and charging system.  Not only does he now have access via higher amp capacity leads, but he saves himself the trouble of disassembly to gain that access !!!

At 12″ long, our SAE 2 Pin – 10 AWG pigtails are generally of sufficient length to extend from a bike’s battery terminals to a point of easy access.  As can be seen in one of the photos, these “pigtails” can also be used in fabricating a battery terminal clip assembly – miniature battery terminal clips available from us, as well.

We offer SAE 2 Pin – 10 AWG Extension/Jumpers in 5′, 8′, and 10′ lengths – 5′ probably being the best choice with with respect to sufficient reach and easy storage.

It should be noted that special attention needs to be paid to polarity…not only while assembling, but also upon using such assemblies.  As can be seen in photos, Mark has marked the “Hot” (+) postive lead with Red electrical tape.  We have these pigtails manufactured with black insulation on both leads – allowing the assembler to mark as needed for a particular application.

12 Volt Accessory Cable Kit Component Polarity and Amp Ratings

by on Jun.20, 2009, under Application

12V Accessory Cable Kit

Swapped emails with the supplier of our 12 Volt Accessory Cable Kits concerning the amp ratings of the individual component cable assemblies and decided to post the results.

Considering this kit is included with the Global Solar SUNLINQ line of Portable Solar Chargers (6.5, 12, and 25 Watt), the components are meant for relatively light amperage applications…mostly…charging handheld electronics. As I’ve discussed in other posts, there are other applications for which the components of this kit are suited.  For example, coupling a 12 volt cell phone charger to a Battery Tender Quick Connect using the power port cable assembly and in some cases the 8′ extension cable.

These two components fit nicely into this application because the SAE 2 Pin on the end of the Battery Tender Quick Connect basically replicates the SAE 2 Pin on the output of one of Global’s Portable Solar Chargers.  Specifically, the protected “female” socket side of the SAE 2 Pin connector on the end of the Quick Connect is “hot” (+) positive.  Therefore, the “exposed” male pin of the SAE 2 Pin connector on the power port assembly leads to the centerpost of the power port socket…which must be “hot” (+) positive.

Now let’s look at an application in which things don’t work out similarly well.  Someone might have the idea they’d like to couple the power plug assembly to the output of their Battery Tender…such that they may insert the power port plug into the cigarette lighter socket of a vehicle of which they’d like to maintain the battery.  NO GO!  Won’t work!  Think about it…  If the protected “female” socket side of the SAE 2 Conductor Connector on the  “Battery Tender Quick Connect installed on your motorcycle’s battery is “hot” (+) positive…the “exposed” male pin on the output of your Battery Tender must be “hot” (+) positive.

Now back to out power port plug – remembering we were saying above…the SAE 2 Pin end of these components is meant to be plugged into an SAE 2 Conductor connector with a “hot” (+) positive “protected” female socket.  So, we have a “polarity” issue here to which we must pay close, careful attention.  Stop and think thing through…thoroughly…before you start coupling connectors together.

The power port plug has an integral 2 amp fuse, so that component’s amp rating is pretty evident.  This is ample capacity for many applications – charging most handheld electronics, etc.  When you get into attempting to power something like a portable air compressor, it’s a different story.  Even a tiny air compressor may draw 7 or 8 amps, or more.  So, this power port plug would not have the rating to be used in an application such as this.  In fact, even the heavier duty power port plugs we handle (stand-alone…without SAE 2 Pin)…are fused at 5 amps…which would still be less than an application such as this might require.  Obviously, power port plugs must be available for this application…because there are miniature compressors employing them…stretched to the limit as they may be.

What about that 12 volt power port!  It’s rated at 7 amps max.   In most cases borderline unacceptable for the air compressor application we discussed above, but providing plenty of capacity for handheld electronics.  But, think about it this way…that Battery Tender Quick Connect installed on your motorcycle battery probably has a 7.5 amp fuse.  So, the 5 piece accessory kit’s power port cable assembly fits nicely into that parameter.

Heated gloves might be OK plugged into one of these power ports…but as always…check the manufacturer’s specifications.  Obviously, stacking up multple pieces of heated clothing is going to put you over the maximum amperage rating.

Speaking of heated clothing…often employing COAX connectors…we’re prompted to talk about the “male” COAX “barrel” connector x SAE 2 Pin adaptor that comes as part of the 5 piece accessory kit.  Once again…7 amps.  So, maybe OK for gloves…but not much more.  Now this brings me to an application that I discuss in another post – using this adaptor to facilitate the maintenance of your battery via the COAX “female” heated clothing pigtail you might have installed on your motorcycle’s battery.  I cannot condone this practice, but figuring that won’t stop some…here’s the problem.  It’s the same polarity problem.  Once again, the polarity is opposite what you need to couple the SAE 2 Pin end to the output of your Battery Tender.

But…alas…I came up with an easy fix…a “rig” of sorts.  Again, I cannot condone this practice…and for that reason…I sell the components as a “do-it-yourself” kit.  Basically, I provide you with the components to assemble what I call a “Hot Socket” Adaptor.  That is, there is continuity between the “protected” female socket at each end.  Therefore, there is a “female” socket to accept the “hot” (+) positive pin of the SAE 2 Pin connector on the output of your Battery Tender…and the respective Adaptor conduct leads to a “hot” (+) positive “protected” female socket at the other end…to accept the “exposed” male pin of the SAE 2 Pin on the COAX cable.  Now, the male COAX end of the COAX Assembly has the correct polarity…and can be coupled to the “female” COAX end of the Heated Clothing pigtail installed on your motorcycle’s battery.  This does the trick for those that wish to avoid having more than (1) pigtail dangling from their battery.

About those Battery Terminal Clamps (component of the 5 piece kit)…  Same situation…  The “exposed” male pin of the SAE 2 Pin of this assembly leads to the red handled (+) poitive alligator clamp.  Therefore, opposite of what it should be…to be coupled to your Battery Tender output SAE 2 Pin.  This assembly carries a 15 amp rating, but remember you’d still be limited by the lower amperage rating of (for example) the 8 foot extension.

This being a post covering a lot of components, topics, and issues…I will no doubt be adding to it in the future…
