New Product – SAE 2 Pin w/5 foot Black SPT-1 cord / 16 AWG leads

by on Feb.05, 2011, under SAE 2 Pin

SAE 2 Pin w/ 5' - 16 AWG

Recognizing the number of Do-it-Yourselfers adding their own accessory wiring, we’ve decided to move beyond our initial SAE 2 Pin with 11-1/2″ of SPT-1 cord and 18 AWG.

This product proved popular with customers, and having surveyed thier intended applications it seems an SAE 2 Pin with a heavier, higher capacity (16 AWG vs. 18 AWG), and longer length (5 foot vs. 11-1/2″) would be well received.

Black, manufactured here in the U.S.A., and using the same high quality SAE 2 Pin connector !!!

10 AWG Application – Customer Pic’s

by on Dec.31, 2010, under Application

Check it out…  Crafty Customer, Mark Penman, assembled and installed some of our SAE 2 Pin – 10 AWG offerings to facilitate easy access to his bike’s 12-volt battery and charging system.  Not only does he now have access via higher amp capacity leads, but he saves himself the trouble of disassembly to gain that access !!!

At 12″ long, our SAE 2 Pin – 10 AWG pigtails are generally of sufficient length to extend from a bike’s battery terminals to a point of easy access.  As can be seen in one of the photos, these “pigtails” can also be used in fabricating a battery terminal clip assembly – miniature battery terminal clips available from us, as well.

We offer SAE 2 Pin – 10 AWG Extension/Jumpers in 5′, 8′, and 10′ lengths – 5′ probably being the best choice with with respect to sufficient reach and easy storage.

It should be noted that special attention needs to be paid to polarity…not only while assembling, but also upon using such assemblies.  As can be seen in photos, Mark has marked the “Hot” (+) postive lead with Red electrical tape.  We have these pigtails manufactured with black insulation on both leads – allowing the assembler to mark as needed for a particular application.

SAE 2 Pin Extension Cable Assemblies

by on Apr.20, 2009, under SAE 2 Pin

SAE 2 Pin extension cables offer some flexibility by providing for distance between the power source and the load – a couple different models to meet the circumstances of various applications.  For example, the lighter model makes for easy routing “on the go”…say from your Battery Tender Quick Connect “pigtail” up into a tank bag or backpack.  Where the sturdier model might be more appropriate for applications warranting greater durability.

“Y” extension cables expand the possibilities with respect to power sources, as well as loads.  “Y” cables facilitate combining multiple power sources in “parallel” to provide more capacity.  On the other hand, they also allow you to distribute power to multiple loads.

Hopefully, that word “parallel” rang a bell from back in the day when you learned about “parallel” vs. “series” circuits.  So, here’s a little refresher for those that haven’t thought about electrical circuits for a while.

Series vs. Parallel Wiring of Power Sources

Although each battery, solar cell, panel or module has a rated voltage and amperage, they can be wired together in such a manner as to obtain varying results.

Series Circuits/Series Wiring or Connection of Power Sources

A “series circuit” is one in which the circuit components are connected “end-to-end” providing a single path for the flow of current through all the components.

Series wiring (or connection) of power sources is accomplished by connecting the (+) “positive” of one power source to the (-) “negative” of the next.

Wiring power sources in series will result in increased voltage.  When power sources are wired in series, the voltages are additive.  Power sources wired in series will provide a total voltage equal to the sum of voltages of each individual power source.

Wiring power sources in series does not result in increased amperage.  A series circuit will have the same current throughout the circuit.

Parallel Circuits/Parallel Wiring or Connection of Power Sources

A “parallel circuit” is one in which two or more circuit components are connected like rungs of a ladder, providing separate paths for current through each of the components.

Parallel wiring (or connection) of power sources is accomplished by connecting the (+) “positive” leads of the power sources together…and then (-) “negative” leads with each other.

Wiring power sources in parallel will result in increased amperage.  When power sources are wired in parallel, the currents (amperages) are additive.  Power sources wired in parallel will provide a total current (amperage) equal to the sum of currents (amperages) of each individual power source.

Wiring power sources in parallel does not result in increased voltage.  A parallel circuit will have the same voltage throughout the circuit.

So, back to the possible applications of our “Y” Extension Cable…

Basically, as I mention above…the “Y” Extension Cable would allow you to combine the power from (2) power sources.  That could be (2) batteries, (2) portable solar chargers, or a combination of the two, i.e., a portable solar charger and a battery.  The beauty of the portable solar charger and battery combination is that the battery provides energy storage, while the portable solar charger provides power generation.  There is the  benefit of the battery being there as a relatively “level” source of power (as long as the battery isn’t drawn down too low)…even while the passing of a cloud may impact the portable solar charger’s output.  Portable solar chargers usually have internal diodes to prevent the “back-flow” of power, during shading.

By-the-way, our Global SUNLINQ Portable Solar Chargers come with an SAE 2 Pin connector on the end of the output cable.  The component cable assemblies that make up the included 5 piece accessory kit, have SAE 2 Pin connector ends, as well.

SAE 2 Pin extension cables, in general…

Extension cables also provide flexibilty with respect to orientation…which can be of key importance in the case of  portable solar chargers.  The ability to not only reach positions of maximum sun exposure, but orient for maximum exposure is  critical to attaining the full power generating capability of portable solar equipment.

When it comes to maintaining the charge of a battery…on board anything from a boat, to lawn tractor, ATV, motorcycle, or anything else with a 12 volt battery…SAE 2 Pin extension cables can prove to be very handy.   They can allow you to plug the Battery Tender into a wall outlet (keeping the unit safe and secure…as well as out of the weather)…and then potentially reaching the battery…in a driveway, in a shed, etc.   Generally, we’re talking current levels of milli-amps…sometimes a little more than 1 amp…so these distances and conductor sizes aren’t an issue.

While we’re on the topic of current levels, let’s talk about wire sizes and amperage ratings.  The lightweight 8 foot extension cable that comes as part of the 5 piece accessory kit (available separately, as well), has 18 AWG conductors and is rated at 10 amps.  Basically black lampcord (along the lines of SPT-1…but not marked as such), this cable is flexible and easily routed.

The standalone 8 foot extension cable is jacketed with a black sheath, therefore of heavier weight…and not quite as flexible…but more durable.  This cord has 16 AWG conductors, but is rated at 10 amps, as well.

I’ll take up these topics with respect to the “Y” extension cable in a future post, along with a more in-depth discussion of it’s potential applications and respective current load implications.

In addition to being very careful with respect to the current loads vs. amp ratings and polarity of various cables and adaptor assemblies, it’s always a good practice to keep close tabs on charging batteries – checking connections, giving the cords a feel, often.

And…always following manufacturer’s specified procedures…including the use of safety glasses, and attention to the issue of vapors and need for proper ventilation.

Deltran not only produces a high quality Battery Tender, but provides sturdy cables, connectors and clamp assemblies.  Deltran Battery Tenders  also come with thorough instructions.  When it comes to battery maintenance equipment – it’s best to stick with an industry leader – for safety’s sake, as well as performance.  Considering both Harley-Davidson and BMW put their name on Deltran Battery Tenders, most people would no doubt agree…Deltran is the industry leader.

DIY Motorcycle Power Port

by on Apr.12, 2009, under Accessories

power-port

By the number of 12 volt power ports with pigtail leads I ship to motorcyclists, I recognize there are a large number of Bikers adding this circuit to their ride.  More often than not, they tell me they are wiring up a rig to power/charge a GPS unit.

I’m not sure how sophisticated they are getting with their circuits, but it sounds like most are keeping it pretty simple.  I offer inline fuseholder assemblies, but I could count the number of those I’ve sold on one hand.  I’m not sure if they are tapping into another circuit on the bike, or going straight to the battery.  It doesn’t seem like I sell SAE 2 Pin connectors to these do-it-yourselfers, so I don’t think they are connecting the power port to a battery quick connect.

Part of the reason I wanted to begin this Blog site was to open the door to interaction along lines such as these.  Provide a forum for dialogue specific to topics like this – thereby, providing the opportunity and means to capture the experiences of others…to the benefit of interested viewers.

I see blog postings on other blog sites addressing these and related topics, but my desire was to drill down on these topics specifically.  With the number and speed with which handheld electronics are coming at us, and the growing popularity of riding on 2-wheels, I decided to seize the opportunity.  Being an engineer…and a biker…I was naturally drawn into this area of interest.  I also appreciate the interaction with those that share a love of motorcycles and motorcycling.

Getting back to the topic at hand, the 12 volt power port I’ve been supplying is of good quality, and manufactured by a company well known for this sort of equipment.  The leads are relatively light and the unit is rated a 5 amps maximum, but that is certainly sufficient for applications such as powering or charging a GPS unit.

It seems that most Bikers are just making up an assembly that they view as relatively temporary…maybe removing it after each use.  Probably figuring they only need GPS when they are on a trip, or traveling in unfamiliar territory.  Hopefully, for more permanent installations they would get a little more sophisticated with their add-on circuits.  Although, if that was the case, they’d probably get more sophisticated with the power port design, as well.  Maybe even one of the power ports suitable for handlebar mounting, with a spring-loaded cap, etc.

At any rate, currently there seems to be plenty of interest in these low cost power ports, and this is no doubt a great opportunity to smoke out the issues that will lead to the development of add-on power ports and circuit designs that will prove best.

Global SUNLINQ Portable Solar Chargers

by on Apr.12, 2009, under Solar

Portable Solar Chargers offer the ability to “Capitalize on the Sun’s Energy” – they provide the means to generate electricity using the sun’s rays.  Pictured above are the members of the the SUNLINQ line of portable solar chargers manufactured by Global Solar.

Global’s portable solar chargers are widely used not only by military personnel in remote locations, but by many others in civilian applications, as well.  Any application precipitating the need to charge a battery/hand held electronics in the field (e.g., communication devices, photography equipment, or navigation equipment such as a GPS unit),  could potentially be addressed with a portable solar charger.

For the sake demonstration, here’s a potential scenario in which one of these folding (therefore packable) solar chargers could serve the motorcyclist.  Say you’re traveling on a motorcycle trip (or maybe you’re an expedition biker), and you’re spending your nights tent camping along the way.  Maybe through the night you’d like to be able to tap into your motorcycle’s battery as a source of 12 volt power for one thing or another – charging handheld electronics, etc.  Using one of these portable solar chargers…with whatever sun remains when you make camp…and then the sunshine available the next morning…you could be trickle charging your motorcycle’s battery back up to full power…even while still tapping into the power for the charging of the handheld electronic device.

Setting aside the above scenario, I’d like to be able to say that if you found your motorcycle’s battery “dead”…lacking the power to crank over the engine…miles from any services, as well as a 110 volt outlet and a battery charger…you have a solution here (obviously, there may be the possibility of getting a jump off another bike).  I’d stop short of saying one of these portable solar chargers would be the answer.  You would be able you to trickle charge your motorcycle’s battery, but I’d hesitate to say you could bring a “dead” battery up to a charge level that will facilitate cranking over the engine…in an amount of time that would suit your needs in a situation such as this.

CAUTION – Do not attempt to start a motorcycle, i.e., crank the engine over…while still connected to a solar charger!  There is not sufficient power generated by a portable solar charger to run a starter and start your engine…and..the amperage draw will overload the light conductors.  This will no doubt “blow” the fuse of a Battery Tender Quick Connect – if it’s of…or near…the proper value – usually 7.5 amps.

Over some period of time…(depending on such variables as the intensity of the sun, orientation to the sun, shading, and the parameters of your specific solar charger, etc.)…one of these portable solar chargers will “trickle charge” your battery.  They are often used to “maintain” the healthy charge level of a battery during periods of no, or minimal use…such as a vehicle left at the airport for an extended amount of time…or a boat with a bilge pump running from time to time.   Considering the sophistication of the electronics of a Deltran Battery Tender, I’d offer that one of these units is a much better choice for something like your prized motorcycle put up for the winter…if you do that!

Friends, these portable solar chargers were pivotal in my recognition of the common link between motorcycle battery maintenance equipment and the majority of portable solar equipment – the SAE 2 Pin connector.

When I became a Global Solar dealer and began handling their line of portable solar chargers and accessories, I soon noticed that the connector on the output of Deltran Battery Tenders and Global SUNLINQ Portable Solar Chargers was the same – an SAE 2 Pin connector.   This awakened me to a “blinding flash of the obvious” – not only could a portable solar charger be connected directly to a motorcycle’s battery via the fused “Quick Connect” (normally left connected to the battery), but this connector opened up a whole range of possibilities with respect to tapping into the power of a motorcycle’s battery and charging system.

Along with a Global Solar  SUNLINQ Portable Solar Charger comes a 5 piece accessory cable kit including:  12 volt power port, 12 volt power plug, and battery terminal clamp cables, as well as an 8 foot extension and a COAX “male” 2.5 mm barrel connector adaptor.  The 5 piece accessory kits alone facilitate a wide range of useful operations.

For example, the 12 volt power port x SAE 2 Pin connector cable can be used to access 12 volt power for a cell phone charger.  The 12 volt power plug could be used the trickle charge a motorcycle battery off a vehicle with a 12 volt battery and power port.  The battery terminal clamp cable could also be used to trickle charge a motorcycle battery off the 12 volt battery of another vehicle.

Since the components of these accessory kits can be indespensible on their own, we make them available through our eBay store (see link below).   Through our eBay store we also make available a heavier, more durable 8 foot extension, as well as a “Y” cable which facilitates either “dual input” or “dual output”.  In addition, we make the Deltran “Quick Connect” with integral 7.5 amp fuse and 5/16″ ring terminals available there.  For those applications where less capacity is required, there is a generic battery “quick connect” with an integral 3 amp fuse and 1/4″ ring terminals.   25 foot extension cords with SAE 2 Pin connectors are available for applications involving greater distances for access, or positioning (for example, orientation to the sun for maximum exposure).

For several years, we’ve been providing customers all over the world with access to Global solar chargers, as well as related equipment.

12 Volt Power Port

by on Apr.03, 2009, under Accessories

I’m probably not alone with respect to finding myself with a dead cell phone battery at inopportune times.  Being caught in this position when preparing to go out for a day of riding, prompted me to come up with a way to charge a cell phone using my motorcycle’s battery and charging system.

I was convinced that the “pig tail” (or “fused quick connect”) generally left connected to one’s motorcycle battery for use as part of a battery tender system, provided a handy means of connection to the motorcycle’s battery and charging system.  It was just a matter of coming up with a cable having that SAE 2 Pin connector at one end and a “cigarette lighter” style power port at the other.

Encouraged by discussion with those with whom I shared this idea, I set out to make these 12 volt power ports readily available to bikers with a desire to power their 12V chargers, etc.

After assembling and trying out a few prototypes, I contracted a manufacturer here in the USA to produce a large quantity of power port assemblies at a length that seemed like it would be popular with many bikers – just long enough to reach our saddlebags (I discuss use of this power port assembly in conjunction with saddlebags in a separate post).

12V Power Port Assembly

12V Power Port Assembly

This was a power port assembly from the initial shipment.
They were about 14″ long, with about 9″ of Black SPT-1 Cord (18 AWG conductors), which was shorter than anticicpated.
Right off, I was thrilled with the high quality SAE 2 Pin connector that our manufacturer turns out.  It’s sturdy, and the size makes it easily grasped.
Since then, the assembly has been lengthened, such that the overall length of the assembly is about 15-1/2″, with 11″ of Black SPT-1 Cord (18 AWG conductors).
We’ve gone through several hundred, and bikers seem to be very pleased with the current length – long enough to reach…yet short enough to make it handy and compact for easy storage.

Using the Bohemian Biker 12V Power Port x SAE 2 Pin Assembly

by on Apr.03, 2009, under Application

In the case of a bike with saddlebags, there is a pretty simple set up that I often use to charge my cell phone while I’m out on my bike.  I use a cable (approximately 12” long) with an SAE 2-prong connector at one end, and a “cigarette lighter” style power port at the opposite end.  I couple the SAE 2-prong connector end up with the matching connector on the “battery tender” pigtail left connected to my Road King’s battery.  Then I plug the 12-volt charger I bought to go along with my cell phone into the power port, and the other end into my cell phone.   There is just enough power port cable length to enable me to put the cell phone, charger, and power port connection in my saddlebag, leaving only a short length of exposed cable.  This set up works like a charm for me, and it has conveniently bailed me out of untimely dead cell phone battery situations many times.

The same set up could be used for charging many other portable electronic devices, keeping the device safely stored in your bike’s saddlebag.   A similar set up could be arranged using a backpack secured to your passenger seat, luggage rack, or gas tank, with sufficient cable length.  If necessary, some sort of conveniently sized bag (made out of leather, for example) could easily be suspended in a strategic location.

pwr-prt-mc-setup-001

pwr-prtmc-setup-002

The 12 Volt Power Port x SAE 2 Pin assembly pictured in these photographs is what we call our “compact” model, since the body of the power port is relatively short in comparison to most I’ve seen.

Although I’ve experienced no problem closing my hinged saddlebag cover across the cable, I anticipate that will interfere with the rubber seal’s ability to do its job…and in the event of rain, water would make its way into the saddlebag.

When we were developing the design for the 12 Volt Power Port x SAE 2 Pin we have had manufactured, the ability to close a hinged saddlebag lid across the cable was taken into consideration.  I chose SPT-1 w/ 18 AWG conductors (vs. the heavier possibilities…SPT-2 /16 AWG) specifically with this ability in mind.
