eBay has been an effective means of driving up search priority for Bohemian Biker LLC, and we appreciate that aspect.

Never-the-less, the ever increasing costs related to doing business via ebay have encouraged us to seek a more economical means.

eBay’s most recent changes in final value fee calculation prompted us to step-up the transition. 

As communicated in other posts, we have established an internet presence with an ecommerce website  www.solarcapitalist.com  and we have been processing orders by that means for a few months now.

Deltran Solar Charger – Installation Plans !!!

We now have a stock of 5W, 10W, and 15W – Deltran Solar Chargers on hand !!!  I’ve opened one of the 5W Solar Chargers, and begun developing plans to install and test it out !!!

Right away, upon inspecting the panel, output lead, accessories, and instructions… I have thoughts, as well as plans…

1st – I recognize an opportunity for an enhanced mounting system.  2nd – I recognize an opportunity for an enhanced output system.  Both of these areas best left up to the installer/user’s specific circumstances.

My planned application is to install one (or more) of the Deltran Solar Chargers on the roof of a large backyard shed…both to charge my motorcycle’s battery, and to charge batteries from which I might draw power for lighting , ventilation, and maybe even an AM radio – after all, I am a devoted political talk show listener.

Having 1st hand experience installing roof-top solar panels, Ive been exposed to and have dealt with some of the challenges that can emerge.

I’ve learned that under-panel ventilation allows the photovoltaic cells to operate most effeciently.  As supplied, the 5W panel frame has 4 small diameter (1/8″ dia., or so) mounting holes – one at each corner of the frame… along with (4) 1-1/2″ screws.  So, my plan would involve integrating 1/2″ thick, 4″ square mounting blocks – one at each corner.   This will provide enough space for air flow, while at the same time limit under-panel access by squirrels, birds, etc.   Additionally, the blocks will result in a mounting system that minimizes the stresses on the plastic frame which may result if the plastic frame were to be secured directly across the uneven surface of roof shingles.  The material I have in mind for the 4″ mounting blocks would be something along the line of 4″ sections of 4″ Azek trim sometimes used in outdoor decks & porch construction.  Generous application of adhesive/sealant with a caulk gun when securing them each to the roof…with (4) screws…will help secure them andseal out moisture.  The solar panel frame will then be screwed to the (4) mounting blocks (these screws will actually extend through the 1/2″ block thickness, and into the roof slightly).

I’ve also learned through the years that critters likes squirrels and chipmunks…love to chew on cable insulation.  (I once rescued an abandoned domestic rabbit…whom within minutes chewed my office phone line in half…no good deed goes unpunished)  So, the 1/2″ clearance will preclude at least under-panel access.  As for their access to the output cable, I have the following ideas…  The output lead provided with the 5W unit is 60″ long with an SAE 2 Pin connector at the end.  Although I have not perused a hardware store for specifics… I’m thinking some sort of a mountable plastic “junction box” would be handy for housing the bundled 60″ length of lightweight output cord, as well as the coupling of it to a heavier weight (possible “jacketed” or even “armored”) ouput cable to be routed down into the shed.

I must add a Special Note of Caution here – I am Not a licensed electrician, and although I have had training and experience in electrical design and installation… I am not up to speed on the current Electrical Code, and especially the specific sections that cover un-inhabited sheds and outbuildings…let alone solar installations.   I should also note that the Electrical Code is no doubt undergoing ongoing revision to address the increasing use of solar generated electric.  It is incumbant upon anyone using or performing installation activities to research, digest, and heed ALL the requirments specified for their particular application…and in their particular municipality.   Upon this writing, I have those plans as well – not only is the safety of our family, and that of our neighbors, at risk… our property, and theirs, is potentially at risk too.  Therefore, there are insurance coverage issues here, no doubt.

So maybe this is a good place to begin discussing placement and orientation.   I say “begin”, because this can be a pretty deep subject if you delve into it very far.   The possibility of a “full scale” roof-top solar installation (on a house, for example) would involve a study of the orientation of dwelling’s roof sections to the sun, the pitch of the roof, trees that would potentially block the sun’s rays, etc.

The installation of a relatively “portable” solar panel (such as one of these Deltran Solar Chargers) gives us some latitude with respect to the above.  We might even be able to place, move, orient, or re-orient a shed for optimum sun exposure.

Anyway – the above are my thought and plans, thus far (as of 7-5-11)…trust they may change as an installation project unfolds…  I’ll either add to this blog post, or create a new one (depending on specific subject) in the future…

So, here’s a product I stumpled upon that seemed like it might be useful to do-it-yourselfers like us!  We’ve been obtaining quantities for a couple years now, and they have become very popular.  Hoping to see some comments as to how they are being used, as well as pictures.  Seemed like tank bags might be a possible application, and some have mentioned this as being the plan.  This molded surface mount connector w/flange (1-7/8″ diameter) has four 3/16″ holes for mounting (fasteners not included), and (2) 12 AWG leads – approximately 11″ long.  As supplied, the red lead is mapped to “male” pin / black lead mapped to “female” socket side of 2 Pin.  For use as a power port, the “protected female” socket should be the “hot” (+) positive side – therefore, insulation colors would not be consistant with standard practice, i.e., red being “hot” positive.

SAE 2 Pin Extension Cable Assemblies

SAE 2 Pin extension cables offer some flexibility by providing for distance between the power source and the load – a couple different models to meet the circumstances of various applications.  For example, the lighter model makes for easy routing “on the go”…say from your Battery Tender Quick Connect “pigtail” up into a tank bag or backpack.  Where the sturdier model might be more appropriate for applications warranting greater durability.

“Y” extension cables expand the possibilities with respect to power sources, as well as loads.  “Y” cables facilitate combining multiple power sources in “parallel” to provide more capacity.  On the other hand, they also allow you to distribute power to multiple loads.

Hopefully, that word “parallel” rang a bell from back in the day when you learned about “parallel” vs. “series” circuits.  So, here’s a little refresher for those that haven’t thought about electrical circuits for a while.

Series vs. Parallel Wiring of Power Sources

Although each battery, solar cell, panel or module has a rated voltage and amperage, they can be wired together in such a manner as to obtain varying results.

Series Circuits/Series Wiring or Connection of Power Sources

A “series circuit” is one in which the circuit components are connected “end-to-end” providing a single path for the flow of current through all the components.

Series wiring (or connection) of power sources is accomplished by connecting the (+) “positive” of one power source to the (-) “negative” of the next.

Wiring power sources in series will result in increased voltage.  When power sources are wired in series, the voltages are additive.  Power sources wired in series will provide a total voltage equal to the sum of voltages of each individual power source.

Wiring power sources in series does not result in increased amperage.  A series circuit will have the same current throughout the circuit.

Parallel Circuits/Parallel Wiring or Connection of Power Sources

A “parallel circuit” is one in which two or more circuit components are connected like rungs of a ladder, providing separate paths for current through each of the components.

Parallel wiring (or connection) of power sources is accomplished by connecting the (+) “positive” leads of the power sources together…and then (-) “negative” leads with each other.

Wiring power sources in parallel will result in increased amperage.  When power sources are wired in parallel, the currents (amperages) are additive.  Power sources wired in parallel will provide a total current (amperage) equal to the sum of currents (amperages) of each individual power source.

Wiring power sources in parallel does not result in increased voltage.  A parallel circuit will have the same voltage throughout the circuit.

So, back to the possible applications of our “Y” Extension Cable…

Basically, as I mention above…the “Y” Extension Cable would allow you to combine the power from (2) power sources.  That could be (2) batteries, (2) portable solar chargers, or a combination of the two, i.e., a portable solar charger and a battery.  The beauty of the portable solar charger and battery combination is that the battery provides energy storage, while the portable solar charger provides power generation.  There is the  benefit of the battery being there as a relatively “level” source of power (as long as the battery isn’t drawn down too low)…even while the passing of a cloud may impact the portable solar charger’s output.  Portable solar chargers usually have internal diodes to prevent the “back-flow” of power, during shading.

By-the-way, our Global SUNLINQ Portable Solar Chargers come with an SAE 2 Pin connector on the end of the output cable.  The component cable assemblies that make up the included 5 piece accessory kit, have SAE 2 Pin connector ends, as well.

SAE 2 Pin extension cables, in general…

Extension cables also provide flexibilty with respect to orientation…which can be of key importance in the case of  portable solar chargers.  The ability to not only reach positions of maximum sun exposure, but orient for maximum exposure is  critical to attaining the full power generating capability of portable solar equipment.

When it comes to maintaining the charge of a battery…on board anything from a boat, to lawn tractor, ATV, motorcycle, or anything else with a 12 volt battery…SAE 2 Pin extension cables can prove to be very handy.   They can allow you to plug the Battery Tender into a wall outlet (keeping the unit safe and secure…as well as out of the weather)…and then potentially reaching the battery…in a driveway, in a shed, etc.   Generally, we’re talking current levels of milli-amps…sometimes a little more than 1 amp…so these distances and conductor sizes aren’t an issue.

While we’re on the topic of current levels, let’s talk about wire sizes and amperage ratings.  The lightweight 8 foot extension cable that comes as part of the 5 piece accessory kit (available separately, as well), has 18 AWG conductors and is rated at 10 amps.  Basically black lampcord (along the lines of SPT-1…but not marked as such), this cable is flexible and easily routed.

The standalone 8 foot extension cable is jacketed with a black sheath, therefore of heavier weight…and not quite as flexible…but more durable.  This cord has 16 AWG conductors, but is rated at 10 amps, as well.

I’ll take up these topics with respect to the “Y” extension cable in a future post, along with a more in-depth discussion of it’s potential applications and respective current load implications.

In addition to being very careful with respect to the current loads vs. amp ratings and polarity of various cables and adaptor assemblies, it’s always a good practice to keep close tabs on charging batteries – checking connections, giving the cords a feel, often.

And…always following manufacturer’s specified procedures…including the use of safety glasses, and attention to the issue of vapors and need for proper ventilation.

12 Volt Accessory Cable 5-pc Kit w/ SAE 2 Pin Connect

This handy accessory kit is comprised of 5 cable assemblies with SAE 2 Pin connect.  The kit includes: 12V Power Port, 12V Power Plug, Battery Terminal Clamps, 2.5mm “male” COAX adaptor, and an 8 foot extension cable.
These cable assemblies can be indispensable.  Coupled with the necessary 12 volt charger, they can facilitate the charging of a cell phone and other electronics.  They can also facilitate the trickle charging of a 12V battery.
The SAE 2 Pin end of these assemblies is meant to be connected to a “power side” SAE 2 Pin connector leading from a power source, i.e., one with a hot (+) positive socket.  In other words, the exposed “male” pin of the SAE 2 Pin connector on the end of these assemblies is meant to be hot (+) positive.
The power port cable assembly, for example, has the conductor leading from the exposed “male” pin of the SAE 2 Pin leading to the (+) positive center post within the power port.   The power port plug assembly, similarly has the conductor leading from the exposed “male” pin of the SAE 2 Pin leads to the (+) positive center post  at the end of the power port plug.
Special attention is required with respect to the battery terminal clamp assembly.  The fact that it is wired similarly…(making it useful for trickle charging, etc., when connected as described above) …makes it unfit for use connected to the output of a Battery Tender.  Here’s why – the SAE 2 Pin connector at the end of a Deltran Battery Tender output has a (+) positive exposed male pin to match up to the SAE 2 Pin of a properly installed Deltran fused Quick Connect…which will have a hot (+) postive female socket.
These are light duty 12 volt cable assemblies, as indicated by the 2 amp fuse integral to the power port plug x SAE 2 Pin assembly.

SAE 2 Pin, 2 Prong, 2 Pole, 2 Conductor – 12 Volt Connector

It seems “SAE 2 Pin” is the most common “name” I’ve seen or heard given this handy connector, but I’ve also seen and heard the following (or variations of the following): SAE 2 Prong, SAE 2 Pole, SAE 2 Conductor, SAE 2 Wire…sometimes in combination with “molded”, “flat”, “trailer light”, or “trailer type” connector.

This is an assembly in which the SAE 2 pin connector is commonly seen – a 12″ extension often used in trailer light applications.   Note that this assembly, being a “true” extension, has the red wire leading to an exposed “male” pin at one end, and protected “female” socket at the other.  Thus, if you have an SAE 2 Pin that you want to connect to…and extend another 12″…the resulting end will have the same “pin” and “socket” arrangement you wanted to “extend”.
This brings up a key but subtle point.  As a matter of practice, if you have a set of wires coming from a source of power…such as a battery…to a SAE 2 Pin connector…the protected “female” socket will be the “hot” (+) positive side of the connector.  A good example of this is the fused “Quick Connect” provided by Deltran with their popular Battery Tenders…which is normally left installed on the battery for ease of battery charge maintenance when desired.  If the “Quick Connect” (or battery “pigtail”…as we sometimes call them) is installed correctly, the protected “female” socket will be the “hot” (+) positive side of the connector.
Think about it…you want the protection from “arcing out” on adjacent metal parts provided by that “enclosed’ socket…rather than have a “hot” exposed pin that could potentially “ground out” and “arc out” on the frame of the bike (regardless of having the tethered cap for protection while not in use).
So…the 12″ extension actually provides what you need to make an SAE 2 Pin “Junction”.  If you cut this assembly in half…you’ll have (2) SAE 2 Pin connectors…each with 6″ leads…and here’s the beauty of this…when you join these two connectors to each other…alas…the red wire leading to the male pin on one joins to the female socket of the other…with its red wire extending in the other direction…a beautiful thing.
This, my friends was one of the recognitions that gave me my start down this road – setting out to aid others in the integration and use of this useful connector.  I thought to myself, this information will be of use to other bikers in their “do-it-yourself” motorcycle accessory circuit wiring projects.  This came after, and as a result of an earlier recognition that both Deltran Battery Tenders  and many portable solar chargers use SAE 2 Pin connectors.  So this is what I’d fondly call a “Paul Harvey moment”…”and now you know the rest of the story”…sorry to hear this gentleman and famous radio personality passed March 1, 2009.
So, you might ask “why are you letting the cat out of the bag with respect to your source of these connectors with pigtail leads?”.  Well, I believe it’s a matter of “value added” – the value I add to this basic component, that is.  I work diligently at being a “search friendly” economical source of these connectors, as well as a source of information about these connectors.  I am more than happy to share what I’ve learned about this connector, and its use.  For some, it might be very easy to find a first hand source of SAE 2 Pin connectors, but for others…living in remote areas, for example…it might not be so easy.  In addition, when I package these “pigtailed” connectors, I make it a point to surprise my customers with the necessary sections of heat shrinkable tubing to aid in making neat installations.  Obviously, do-it-yourselfers could very well have this already, but generally my customers seem delighted to receive a little extra they hadn’t figured on.
I make these pigtailed connectors readily, conveniently, and economically available in 3 different forms – “power side”, “load side”, and as a “junction” assembly.  A “power side” connector being an SAE 2 Pin having the conductor with red insulation – indicating “hot” (+) positive –  leading to the protected “female” socket.  Conversely, a “load side” connector is an SAE 2 Pin which has the conductor with red insulation – “hot” (+) positive again – leading to the exposed “male” pin, as a “mate” to the above.  A “junction” is a “mating” set, including (1) “power side” and (1) “load side” pigtailed connector.
Bohemian Biker LLC makes SAE 2 Pin connectors available in another form, as well –  a higher quality form, actually.  We have an assembly manufactured here in the USA which integrates a larger bodied (lengthwise) SAE 2 Pin connector with approxiamately 11-1/2″  of Black SPT-1 Cord /2-18 AWG conductors.

 The larger size of this molded connector make it easier to manipulate, plus it’s sturdier.  As far as aesthetics go, being all Black is a plus, and the longer length provides some additional latitude with respect to stowing away the wire connection.  Again, I make it a point to include heat shrinkable tubing…in this case…both for the individual conductors…and for the cord (to go over the individual connections once heat shrink is applied to them) with enough to extend beyond each end of the individual areas with heat shrink applied.
Soldered joints are the ticket!  A small butane torch, solder, and a little practice will result in nice secure connections.  Depending on your specific wiring circumstances…you might need to put the wire through the tube of heat shrink beforehand, but make sure it’s far enough away not to heat it up prematurely.  The second layer of heat shrink over the whole cord provides some strain relief, as well as added protection.
Another handy aspect of this Black corded SAE 2 Pin connector is that there is no color coding.  Therefore it can be wired either way…as a “power side” or as a “load side” connector…without violating the color standard.  Although…you don’t have that color indication to keep you straight either!

Using the Bohemian Biker 12V Power Port x SAE 2 Pin Assembly

In the case of a bike with saddlebags, there is a pretty simple set up that I often use to charge my cell phone while I’m out on my bike.  I use a cable (approximately 12” long) with an SAE 2-prong connector at one end, and a “cigarette lighter” style power port at the opposite end.  I couple the SAE 2-prong connector end up with the matching connector on the “battery tender” pigtail left connected to my Road King’s battery.  Then I plug the 12-volt charger I bought to go along with my cell phone into the power port, and the other end into my cell phone.   There is just enough power port cable length to enable me to put the cell phone, charger, and power port connection in my saddlebag, leaving only a short length of exposed cable.  This set up works like a charm for me, and it has conveniently bailed me out of untimely dead cell phone battery situations many times.

The same set up could be used for charging many other portable electronic devices, keeping the device safely stored in your bike’s saddlebag.   A similar set up could be arranged using a backpack secured to your passenger seat, luggage rack, or gas tank, with sufficient cable length.  If necessary, some sort of conveniently sized bag (made out of leather, for example) could easily be suspended in a strategic location.

The 12 Volt Power Port x SAE 2 Pin assembly pictured in these photographs is what we call our “compact” model, since the body of the power port is relatively short in comparison to most I’ve seen.

Although I’ve experienced no problem closing my hinged saddlebag cover across the cable, I anticipate that will interfere with the rubber seal’s ability to do its job…and in the event of rain, water would make its way into the saddlebag.

When we were developing the design for the 12 Volt Power Port x SAE 2 Pin we have had manufactured, the ability to close a hinged saddlebag lid across the cable was taken into consideration.  I chose SPT-1 w/ 18 AWG conductors (vs. the heavier possibilities…SPT-2 /16 AWG) specifically with this ability in mind.
