SAE 2 Pin Assemblies Manufactured in the USA !!!

by on Feb.09, 2012, under USA #1

Our own SAE 2 Pin assemblies are manufactured right here in the USA.  The quality is indicative of American workmanship.  Each and every piece is visually inspected in an effort to assure the highest level of quality is maintained.

We make other manufacturer’s products available, as well – some of which may have been produced outside of the USA.  These are quality products, as well, meeting the necessary form, fit, and function requirements of their intended use.  The companies that manufacture these products (or contract for their manufacture), conduct quality control inspections of these products and stand behind them.

There are also the mass produced SAE 2 Pin connector assemblies available on the market (generally found in discount automotive stores).  Having handled thousands of these light duty SAE 2 Pin assemblies produced outside of the USA, we have become accustomed to seeing a significant number of what we call “blems”.  These “blemished” assemblies generally have a visual defect, cosmetic in nature.  For example, a very small (sometimes almost indiscernible) void in the molded plastic of the connector body which exposes a minute amount of insulation.  Again, these are cosmetic in nature, and do not negatively impact the form, fit, and function of the connector – they can still carry out their intended function in a perfectly safe manner.  If you were to buy a number of these individually packaged SAE 2 Pin assemblies, you would likely come upon a “blem” or two.

Our position is one based in perceiving a world of plenty.  There exists an opportunity for any manufacturer to bring their products to the global marketplace.  The world will be the judge of the viability of those products – based on their quality, price, and availability.

As American Citizens, and as a U.S. Citizen-owned companies – We are committed to putting America 1st.  Manufacturing in America 1st, and obtaining supplies and services here in America 1st.  That’s conscientiously doing Our part as American Citizens to keep America 1st by giving Americans the opportunity to produce 1st.  It is up to each and every one of US, as American Citizens, to see to it We are competitive in the Global Marketplace.  When we’re not, the sales and the supporting production will go to those who are – that’s inherant in the “free” marketplace.

SAE 2 Pin Defined

by on Feb.08, 2012, under Terminology

As indicated by the “SAE” aspect of this connector’s designation, the specifications for this connector were developed by the Society of Automotive Engineers.  Learning that, we are quick to realize this connector was (at least initially) intended for use in automotive industry applications.   Therefore, the SAE 2 Pin Connector was developed for use in DC (Direct Current) circuits - most often 12 Volt DC.  So in the world of electrical connectors, the SAE 2 Pin Connector would be loosely defined as a type of ”DC Connector”.

Further defintion of an SAE 2 Pin might include the description “hermaphrodite” two conductor DC connector.  The term “hermaphrodite” is applicable because each connector includes both “male” and “female” components – an exposed “male” pin, and a protected “female” socket.

An SAE 2 Pin Connector is often seen on the output of battery maintenance equipment, such as the industry leader – Deltran Battery Tenders.

Therefore, the associated accessory assemblies are outfitted with an SAE 2 Pin connector of the polarity necessary to carry out the intended function.  For example, a Deltran Battery Tender “Quick Connect” assembly, to which a Battery Tender output can be coupled to maintain a motorcycle 12V battery’s charge during periods of little or no use.

Thus far in this post, we have focused on the term “SAE 2 Pin”, but this connector is often given other names – SAE 2 Prong, SAE 2 Pole, SAE 2 Conductor, 2 Pole Flat Trailer Connector, etc.  It’s pretty clear that “SAE 2 Pin’ is indeed the appropriate terminology, based on the connector’s specification developer (SAE – Society of Automotive Engineers) and this term’s consistant use.

The SAE 2 Pin connector has surfaced as the predominant choice in the portable solar charger industry, as well.  For example, Global Solar’s SUNLINQ 6.5 and 12 Watt portable solar chargers have an SAE 2 Pin connector on their output cable.  The associated accessory kit consists of 5 cable assemblies with SAE 2 Pin connectors.  The polarity of these assemblies is specific to their use coupled to the output of the 6.5W or 12W portable solar charger.

Deltran’s 5W, 10W & 15W Solar Panel powered Battery Tenders feature and SAE 2 Pin output, as well.

The predominance of the SAE 2 Pin connector in 12 Volt DC applications is prompting a growing assortment of cable assemblies and adapters.  For example, SAE 2 Pin x COAX adapters.

SAE 2 Pin connectors are being made available in a wider range of wire gauge, as well.  Heavier AWG leads are facilitating greater current carrying capacities, and thereby use in higher current flow applications.

Replacement SAE 2 Pin Connector Cap – Made in the USA !!!

by on Feb.08, 2012, under Caps

One often heard request was for SAE 2 Pin “Caps”, which we took on answering.  Our searches for a supplier came up empty handed, so we endeavored to manufacture one.

Of course, that involved the development of a mold.  Never-the-less, willing to go the distance – we made that investment.

So, here’s a look at them:

Because we’ve manufactured them with a relatively soft rubber, they are easily manipulated onto a connector – and they remain in place.

We’re pleased with this product, and able to offer quantities at a very reasonable cost.

American Made Surface Mountable SAE 2 Pin Connectors

by on Feb.06, 2012, under Mountable

We now have our own Surface Mountable SAE 2 Pin Connector Assembly to offer – another quality Bohemian Biker LLC product  manufactured right here in the United States !!!

Initially, we found and provided an Surface Mount SAE 2 Pin assembly that was “polarity specific”.  That is, it had red and black insulated leads and was most readily available in one polarity.

This “polarity specific” assembly had 12 AWG leads, which seemed to be an adequate choice in terms of ampacity (current carrying capacity) for many do-it-yourself applications.

Quickly recognizing its popularity, we set out to develop our own SAE 2 Pin Surface Mount assembly.  Ours has 12″ of Black cord, such that the installer has the latitude to choose the polarity without violating a “hot” (+) positive wire insulation color standard.  The black cord of our product not only provided the benefit of “polarity of choice”, but the added aesthetic value of “all black” desirable in many applications.  An added benefit of this softer black cord is its flexibility, a desirable feature in many applications.

The ability to solidly mount an SAE 2 Pin connection on a soft (such as in the case of a motorcycle tank bag) or rigid surface (such as in the case of a plastic motorcycle saddlebag case), can be of key importance in many do-it-yourself applications.  It not only has advantages in terms of convenience, but also often in terms of security and sealing out moisture.

Some might also refer to this form of SAE 2 Pin connector as a “bulkhead connector”.  In an application where you have multiple compartments (in, for example, some sort of an enclosure, or box), one of these “surface mount connectors” could be used as a “bulkhead connector”.  A “bulkhead” being a wall or barrier between two adjacent compartments.

Just like the model we found initially available, ours has a tethered cap – which is a cool feature.  A surface mount’s ”inset” configuration provides some inherent protection, but the protection added by a cap if often appreciated.  A cap adds to aesthetics when the connection is not not in use, as well.

American Made Heavy Duty SAE 2 Pin Assembly Variations

by on Feb.05, 2012, under HD Variations

Having taken on making our niche SAE 2 Pin connectors, the idea of developing a wide assortment of heavy duty variations occurred to us.  Not long after developing and manufacturing our initial offering we began addressing heavier AWG assemblies.  In this post, we will discuss the variation stages we have ventured through thus far.

Note:  All of these products are manufactured here in the United States.

The first offering manufactured by us was the assembly below – high quality SAE 2 Pin connector with enhanced strain relief and 11-1/2″ Black of SPT-1 cord with 18 AWG leads.  These proved popular with do-it-yourselfers wiring up light accessory circuits, etc.  Following that came that same SAE 2 Pin connector with 5 feet of Black SPT-1 and 16 AWG leads.

The first of our heavier duty line to be developed and manufactured was SAE 2 Pin pigtail assemblies with 12 AWG leads – 12″ long.

These were welcomed by do-it-yourselfers, as well – especially with solar enthusiasts, amateur radio enthusiasts, and others with a desire for SAE 2 Pin connectors with up-sized leads.

Initially, we manufactured this product with lead insulation colored red and black.  We called the pigtail “Power Side” when the red insulated wire lead to the protected “socket” side of the SAE 2 Pin, and called it a “Load Side” pigtail when the red insulated wire lead to the exposed male pin side of the SAE 2 Pin.

Next to be addressed was SAE 2 Pin pigtail assemblies with 10 AWG leads – 12″ long.

We chose to stick with black insulated/separate 10 AWG cables vs. red/black insulation – thus leaving polarity up to the installer.

Those two variations in hand, we were quick to follow with SAE 2 Pin “whip assemblies” 5 foot long leads in both 12 and 10 AWG.  Again, we choose to stick with black insulated/separate cables vs. red/black insulation.

As you can imagine, applying an SAE 2 Pin connector to the far end was right around the corner.  So, we started cranking out SAE 2 Pin Extensions with black insulated/separate 10 AWG cables – 5, 8, and 10 foot long.

Basics of SAE 2 Pin Connector Assembly Polarity

by on Feb.04, 2012, under Polarity

Whenever one contemplates use of SAE 2 Pin connectors, an understanding of, and attention to, “polarity” is vital.  Vital in terms of safety, and avoiding possible damage to components.

For the novice (and those who have forgotten) – “polarity” means identifying the “hot” (+) positive side of the connector vs. the negative (-) side.

When there are leads of different insulation colors, say red and black (or white) – the red insulation by standard indicates “hot” (+) positive.

Understand this is a standard, but one should always test to confirm.  Such a test would entail connecting a voltmeter contacting the end of this red insulated lead at the connector and ground.  If there is a voltage indicated (probably 12 volts), then we have confirmed this is indeed the “hot” (+) positive side.

Obviously, with respect to the (-) negative side, the opposite would be the case.  In accordance with standard, this would be indicated by an insulation color other than red – usually black, or white.

Understand that there are times when a color other than red is used to indicate “hot” (+) positive.  For example, if there are several “hot” (+) positive wires (such as in the case of car stereo wiring, i.e., radio power, and keep alive power for memory) a color like yellow might be a “hot” (+) positve wire.

Another application in which there will be multiple ”hot” (+) positive wires would be in a trailer light wiring harness and at the vehicle’s disconnect plug.  Even for simple trailer light wiring systems, there may be three “hot” wires – each for various lights (running lights, turn signals, brakes).  Of course there will be a ground (usually black) shared by each of these individual circuits.  In fact, the metal trailer frame is the ground for individual lights in many cases.

While on the subject of trailer lights, it should be noted that this an application in which the SAE 2 Pin connector can be found.  In fact, it is often called a “2 pole flat trailer connector”.  12″ red and white extensions with these connectors can be readily found in the trailer hitch (trailer lights, wiring and connectors) area of your local discount automotive store – most certainly Hopkin’s products.  These are great, certainly filling the bill in many other light applications.  “Light” meaning low current applications, since the wiring is generally 16 or 18 AWG.

These extensions are true “extensions”, i.e., properly connected, you end up with the polarity you started with… at the far end of the extension.  …if the red “hot” (+) positive wire is leading to the female side of the SAE 2 Pin you want to extend 12″… upon coupling the end of one of these 12″ extensions with the red wire leading to the exposed male pin…  the opposite end will have the red wire of the 12″ extension leading to the female side of the SAE 2 Pin at the other end.

SAE 2 Pin Configurations

by on Feb.04, 2012, under Configurations

SAE 2 Pin configurations range from the basic…

to those with added strain relief…

Connectors with enhanced strain relief provide the added benefit of being a little easier to manipulate when coupling and uncoupling.

Raised bars on the flat sides of these connectors make them easier to grip when coupling and uncoupling.

Another configuration difference see above is separated leads (of different colors) vs. Black SPT-1 cord.
