SAE 2 Pin Connectors, Zamp Solar, and Deltran Battery Tender

Let’s Get Something Straight…

It seems that Zamp Solar wires their solar panels with a polarity opposite that of Deltran Battery Tenders, including Deltran Solar Powered Battery Tenders.

In an effort to explore this, lets go back to basics. Being my first exposure to an SAE 2 Pin connection, I like to go back to a Deltran Quick Connect installed on a motorcycle battery as basic.

As a matter of practice, SAE 2 Pin connector assemblies are connected to a power source (such as a battery), with the polarity such that the Hot (+) Positive is protected from arcing out on base metal by the enclosed socket side of the SAE connector.

Therefore, a Deltran Battery Tender is set up with a polarity to couple to that particular polarity configuration – thus, it is the exposed “male” pin side of the SAE connector on the Battery Tender output cable which is Hot (+) Positive.

The trouble emerged when RV owners with Zamp Solar outfitted rigs went to connect a Deltran Battery Tender to the “Zamp port” to maintain batteries.

So in response, Zamp Solar outfitted RV Owners, have pursued various work arounds – basically, “adapters”, or they’ve resorted to temporarily reconfiguring cable connections.

One thing is for sure, this situation has caused Zamp Solar outfitted RV Owners to pay careful attention to polarity.

We have found that those delving into to this topic, and calling me for SAE 2 Pin Connectors assemblies, are well prepared to discuss polarity.

One of the reasons I have chosen to provide SAE 2 Pin connector assemblies with “both black” leads is – it prompts the installer to be cognizant of polarity.

We provide red & black, as well, for those desiring that insulation color standard, but I use the phrases “power side” and “load” side to describe the respective connector configurations in a junction.

So, Red signifying Hot (+) Positive, on a “power side” SAE connector – the Red wire leads to the protected socket side, and on a “load side” SAE connector – the Red wire leads to the exposed male pin.

SAE 2 Pin Connector use – Battery Maintenance, Portable Solar, and Low Voltage Power Applications

Internet queries relative to SAE 2 Pin connectors uncover a vast array of uses across a number of applications.  These range from battery charge maintenance and portable solar charging applications to various low voltage power applications.

Found on the output of many pieces of battery maintenance equipment (such as the Deltran Battery Tender), they are often used as a quick means of connection to facilitate maintenance of the battery of a piece of equipment that may experience periods of little or no use.  For example, a snowmobile during the off-season.

The Portable Solar industry is another area in which the SAE 2 Pin connector showed up as a convenient means of connection.

So, Battery Tenders and Portable Solar Chargers might be at the top of the list. Nevertheless, other applications have certainly emerged as a result of the exposure.

AN SAE 2 Pin connector might be found on an ATV, Boat, Motorcycle, Snowmobile, RV – Motor Home, Travel Trailer or Utility Trailer.

It is used in a number of Regular Service, as well as Emergency and Emergency Preparedness applications – including power and/or backup power, and communications (Citizens Band or CB Radio, and HAM or Ameteur Radio), as well as GPS.

It is also used across a range of recreational activities – including Hunting, Fishing, Power Boating, Kayaking, Canoeing, Sailing, Camping, Backpacking, Touring, and Photagraphy.

Portable Solar Charger – A Key Component of Being Prepared

A Portable Solar Charger is a key component of Being Prepared for a Disaster.

Your cell phone being a key component of your Emergency Preparation Plan, a means of keeping it charged follows.

Although there may be a disruption in our ability to make cellular phone calls, texting may still be possible.

A Portable Solar Charger provides a viable means of charging a cell phone.  These foldable (therefore, stowable) solar charging units, can be positioned (layed out or hung) in a manner maximizing exposure to the Sun.

An assortment of models with various wattages, provide a range of charging times.  Generally, the higher the wattage the shorter the charging time.  4 Watt models are common, with charging times of a few hours.

Another model feature to which attention should be payed – the output configuration of  a particular Portable Solar Charger.  For example, USB or SAE 2 Pin connection.  USB connection being based on 5 Volts, and SAE 2 Pin being based on 12 Volts (generally).

As in many realms – keeping things simple is best.  The fewer component (assemblies) necessary, the better.  We’ve given thought to, and gained experience with these issues through developing cell phone charging practices while motorcycling (Reference: www.bohemianbiker.com ).

Cell Phones accompanied by a charging system that includes a USB cord, could be safely coupled to the output USB port of a Portable Solar Charger designed for that application.

Others, requiring a 12 Volt charger, will likely involve the use of an Adapter Cable Assembly providing a 12V “Cigarette Lighter” style Power Port Socket.  An example would be an Adapter Assembly with this style 12V Power Port Socket at one end, and an SAE 2 Pin connector at the other end (with the nevessary Polarity, of course).  The SAE 2 Pin end would then be coupled to the output of a so designed Portable Solar Charger.

Keep in mind, the delta between developing 5 Volts (in the case of USB) and developing 12 Volts (such that the 12V Charger can then step that 12 Volts down to 5 Volts, or whatever Charging Voltage requirement your particular Cell Phone requires).

Basic Knowledge of Photovoltaic Principles

A basic knowledge of Photovoltaic Principles will no doubt be of importance to anyone considering the us of PV – Capitalizing On the Sun’s Energy.

The Photovoltaic effect is exhibited by certain semiconductors, and is a method of generating electrical power by converting solar radiation into direct current electricity.

We found this great explanation of Photovoltaics on NASA’s website – credit to Gil Knier.

“Photovoltaics is the direct conversion of light into electricity at the atomic level. Some materials exhibit a property known as the photoelectric effect that causes them to absorb photons of light and release electrons. When these free electrons are captured, an electric current results that can be used as electricity.”

Materials presently used for photovoltaics include monocrystalline silicon, polycrystalline silicon, amorphous silicon, cadmium telluride, and copper indium gallium selenide/sulfide.

Global Solar is the only manufacturer in full-scale production of CIGS (Copper Indium Gallium diSelenide) PV cells on a flexible substrate.

This depositing of one or more thin layers (thin film) of photovoltaic material on a substrate results in what is called a thin-film solar cell (also called a thin-film photovoltaic cell).

Global’s innovative process of depositing CIGS on flexible stainless-steel substrate facilitates lower manufacturing costs.   This is opening up new and alternative markets where solar hasn’t been a viable option in the past, helping drive the solar market into the next level of innovation, adoption and affordability.

Next we would do well to cover terms pertinent to Photovoltaics like – solar “cell”,  solar “panel”, solar “module”, and solar “array”.  Above we discussed how a solar “cell” is made, and you would recognize them as the small squares making up a solar “panel”.  Also called a solar “module”, a solar “panel” is some number of solar “cells” assembled in rows on a frame and wired in series (see our post on Basic Electrical Theory for a refresher on “series” circuits).  You’ve no doubt seen an individual solar “panel” (or “module”) mounted on a piece of road construction traffic signal equipment, or above a roadside call box on an Interstate Highway.  A solar “array” is some group of solar “panels” (or “modules”) installed on a roof, or other supporting structure.

Basic Electrical Theory Refresher

Refreshing our minds with Basic Electrical Theory will no doubt be of benefit to those considering the use of solar power – photovoltaics (PV).

First, we’ll review some terminology…

Voltage (V) is the the “potential” difference between two points.

Amperage (I) is the amount of electrical energy flowing.

Resistance (R) is a measure of the degree to which the flow of electric current is opposed.

Ohm’s Law states that the current through a conductor between two points is directly proportional to the potential difference across the two points.

I = V/R, or V = IR, where I is the current through the conductor in units of amperes, V is the potential difference measured across the conductor in units of volts, and R is the resistance of the conductor in units of ohms.

Electrical Polarity (positive and negative) is present in every electrical circuit.

In a Direct Current (DC) circuit, one pole is always negative, the other pole is always positive and the electrons flow in one direction only.

Series vs. Parallel Wiring of Power Sources

Although each battery, solar cell, panel or module has a rated voltage and amperage, they can be wired together in such a manner as to obtain varying results.

Series Circuits / Series Wiring or Connection of Power Sources

A “series circuit” is one in which the circuit components are connected “end-to-end” providing a single path for the flow of current through all the components.

Series wiring (or connection) of power sources is accomplished by connecting the (+) “positive” of one power source to the (-) “negative” of the next.

Wiring power sources in series will result in increased voltage.  When power sources are wired in series, the voltages are additive.  Power sources wired in series will provide a total voltage equal to the sum of voltages of each individual power source.

Wiring power sources in series does not result in increased amperage.  A series circuit will have the same current throughout the circuit.

Parallel Circuits / Parallel Wiring or Connection of Power Sources

A “parallel circuit” is one in which two or more circuit components are connected like rungs of a ladder, providing separate paths for current through each of the components.

Parallel wiring (or connection) of power sources is accomplished by connecting the (+) “positive” leads of the power sources together…and then (-) “negative” leads with each other.

Wiring power sources in parallel will result in increased amperage.  When power sources are wired in parallel, the currents (amperages) are additive.  Power sources wired in parallel will provide a total current (amperage) equal to the sum of currents (amperages) of each individual power source.

Wiring power sources in parallel does not result in increased voltage.  A parallel circuit will have the same voltage throughout the circuit.
